My Cancer Journey from Diagnosis to Recovery

Cancer Coach: Support for Patients, Survivors, and Caregivers

Is Cancer Coaching Right for You?

You might have heard about a recommended cancer coach from a friend after sharing your diagnosis…

Or stumbled upon the concept while seeking guidance online for your situation…

Regardless if you’re a patient, survivor, or caregiver, cancer coaching can provide the assistance you need.

Overwhelmed by your cancer diagnosis? A cancer coach might be the help you’re looking for.

During my own battle with cancer, cancer coaches were not an option.

I faced the challenge of finding and understanding the right information alone, spending endless hours researching, which only heightened my confusion and overwhelm.

Despite my family’s best efforts to support me, I felt isolated and misunderstood because they had no firsthand experience with cancer.

When I finally entered remission after months of striving, my feelings were unexpectedly complex:

Fearful of the cancer returning Struggling with my new, post-mastectomy body Anxious about making the most of my life now that I valued the little things more It was only when I sought help from various professionals that my life began to improve.

This journey inspired me to become a cancer coach.

Cancer coaching offers empowerment, knowledge, and support. With a coach by your side, you’ll gain essential tools to confidently make decisions and tackle the obstacles that lie ahead.

What is a cancer coach?

A cancer coach is a skilled professional dedicated to supporting cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. While doctors and nurses concentrate on medical treatments, a cancer coach helps you manage the physical, emotional, and practical aspects of living with cancer.
We achieve this by providing guidance, resources, and tools to help you navigate the often overwhelming world of cancer.
A cancer coach can assist you in various ways, such as:

  • Clarifying your diagnosis and treatment options
  • Managing the physical and emotional side effects of treatments
  • Developing coping strategies for the emotional impact of cancer, whether you’re a patient, caregiver, or survivor
  • Selecting the right doctor or treatment center for your needs
  • Enhancing communication with your healthcare team to empower you in making informed health decisions

Moreover, a cancer coach connects you with resources and referrals to other professionals, like nutritionists, therapists, and support groups, to make your journey more positive and manageable.

How does cancer coaching work?

Cancer coaching offers a personalized approach to cancer care, treating you as a whole person rather than just addressing the disease.
In my role as a cancer coach, I support patients, survivors, and caregivers, aiming to make this journey more manageable, uplifting, and positive. This includes:

1) Mapping Your Future

Cancer is just one chapter in your life, not the entire story.

I strongly believe that this can be a chance for you to redefine yourself and begin living your dream life, just as I did.

Together, we’ll pinpoint your unique needs and aspirations. Then, we’ll create a plan to help you reach them, and I’ll be by your side until you feel confident and independent.

2) Hands-On Guidance

Lifestyle factors like nutrition and exercise significantly influence your overall health and well-being. They are not only crucial for cancer prevention but also for improving your experience during treatment.

With my background as a food science engineer and health educator, I know what your body requires to thrive throughout and beyond cancer.

I will provide you with practical advice based on what has proven effective for me and my clients, explaining the science behind my recommendations to empower you to take control of your own health.

3) Compassionate Care

Cancer often stirs up challenging emotions such as fear, sadness, and guilt.

As your cancer coach, I’m here to help you navigate these feelings and express them healthily, making your journey feel more manageable and positive instead of overwhelming and exhausting.

With a cancer coach by your side, you’ll feel acknowledged, listened to, and understood by someone dedicated to supporting you.

4) Information

Understanding is empowering! My goal is to help you grasp the details of your diagnosis and explore the treatments that best suit you. I assist cancer patients in comprehending what is happening in their bodies, from diagnosis through recovery and beyond.

5) Non-Judgmental Support

In my practice, I ensure clients are well-informed to make the best choices for themselves. I am here to support whatever path you decide to take, whether it’s:

  • Conventional medicine
  • Complementary therapies
  • Alternative health practitioners
  • Energy healing
  • Counseling and therapy

My Cancer Coaching Method

As a cancer survivor and coach, my aim is to empower you to take charge of your cancer care and recovery.

I believe in your right to make your own health decisions, and I’m here to support you at every turn.

My method of cancer coaching is holistic, considering every facet of your life and well-being.

As your cancer coach, I’m dedicated to ensuring that no one has to face the same struggles I did when cancer coaches were not available.

My journey was filled with frustration and endless searching for answers. I had no idea how to cope with my diagnosis, and it took a significant emotional toll. (You can read my story here.)

Thankfully, we now have more information available online than ever before.

However, this abundance of information can be overwhelming and time-consuming if you don’t know what actually works.
Despite advancements, some stigmas remain.

Cancer is still often seen as a death sentence…

Patients and survivors are still labeled simply as ‘cancer’…

The mention of cancer instills fear in those who haven’t experienced it, making diagnoses even more shocking and difficult to process.

Additionally, some medical professionals lack tact in their communication, leading to feelings of helplessness and despair.

A cancer coach provides the exact opposite experience. So… Should you consider working with one?

Patient-Focused Cancer Coaching

If you’re grappling with fear, guilt, sadness, anger, and shock, know that these emotions are completely normal. A cancer coach can help you navigate through them.

Right after a diagnosis, cancer coaching can assist you in:

  • Grasping the details of your diagnosis
  • Exploring your treatment options
  • Finding reliable information about your condition and treatments
  • Communicating your diagnosis to loved ones
  • Seeking a second opinion
  • Connecting with complementary health practitioners
  • Expressing concerns to your medical team
  • Asking for support without feeling guilty

A cancer coach can demystify medical jargon and clarify the pros and cons of various treatment options, empowering you to make informed decisions and regain control over your situation.

If you’re currently fighting cancer, a cancer coach can assist you in managing the physical and emotional challenges of your illness and treatments in a healthy manner, including:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Expressing and processing your emotions
  • Enhancing treatment outcomes with proper nutrition
  • Alleviating treatment side effects through lifestyle adjustments
  • Building resilience
  • Coping with physical changes

Additionally, we can link you to support groups and other resources to help you feel less isolated and more connected with others undergoing similar experiences.
